Discount grocer Lidl still has plans to build several stores in the Philadelphia/South Jersey area, even if other projects are on hold, according to local government officials. Three planned projects are continuing while two others seem to be on pause as the company reevaluates its growth plans, the officials said.
Kroger will launch online sales in China via a storefront on Alibaba Group's Tmall Global marketplace, the company said. The site, set to launch today, will begin with private-label products, including Kroger's organic Simple Truth brand, and dietary supplements.
An app called Pinto will allow shoppers to scan the back of a grocery product and then produce a nutrition label based on the consumer's specific dietary needs. Issues that the app can highlight for consumers include food allergens, dietary goals and other concerns such as added sugars.
Anneliese Tanner, food services director at the Austin Independent School District in Texas, says schools could serve organic produce and grass-fed beef if more students purchased school meals. Tanner did an analysis and determined that the district could serve all organic fruits and vegetables if each student who doesn't currently eat a school lunch did so twice a week.

Kimberly-Clark said this week it plans to raise prices by the "mid-to-high single digits" on brands such as Kleenex, Viva and Huggies to mitigate the impact of higher hardwood pulp costs. The price increases are expected to go into effect by the fourth quarter of this year.
As demand for protein grows worldwide, Tyson Foods is working to improve animal welfare, introduce plant-based proteins into its offerings and invest in lab-created meats -- with the possibility of eventually creating them in-house. "If we can grow the meat without the animal, why wouldn't we?" said CEO Tom Hayes.
Musician Bryce Vine has signed on to work with PepsiCo on the firm's revived Sound Drop music platform. The project, which has generated 1.6 billion impressions and 43 million video views since launching, aims to support emerging artists, said Emma Quigley, PepsiCo's head of music.
